In the Catskills, a tornado warning has been issued for southwest Sullivan County until 8 p.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service said.
Showers have developed along a line around Manhattan and north into the Bronx and Westchester.
Brief heavy downpours can be expected and a rumble of thunder cannot be ruled out.
Most of the storm activity is expected west of the Hudson River.
In northern Orange County, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday.
Minor hail damage to vehicles is possible, the National Weather Service said, adding, "Expect wind damage to trees and power lines."
Rain will continue until around noon on Sunday, April 23, which will be mostly cloudy with a high in the mid-60s. There will be a possibility for scattered showers at times again Sunday night into the overnight hours on Monday, April 24.
New rainfall amounts between an inch and an inch-and-a-half are possible during the entire weekend.
